Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton
Kevin and Nicki Mullaly and Martin and Judy Ross are cycling from Lyon to Le Puy, Le puy to Santiago Compostela following the camino del Norte route. This blog is a record of our rides and photos.
An early start this morning with a 500m vertical climb from where we were staying. We joined the camino trail at 55km to go and followed this into Santiago. It was awesome getting off the road and amongst the forest and all the walkers. We didn’t arrive until 4pm so it was a long day with 80+km and 1500m of climbing. Great to be finished.
Stats: approx 1900km and 21,000m vert climbing
My sister Dianne has traveled over from England to have a few days with us in Santiago before we fly out on Sunday.
A chilly 8 degrees on the downhill this morning. We passed the 100km to go mark at our breakfast stop. We are travelling off the Camino course to stay at a beautiful old Rectory. It is amazing, and its like in the middle of nowhere. I am sure it will be worth the 500m vertical climb out of here tomorrow. Santiago here we come!
Back to our beautiful weather today. A short day on the bike so we left late at about 10.30. We followed what seems to be our favourite rd the N634. A big 10km hill to start, high up in the hills with the wind turbines. The traffic was light and a wide hard shoulder to ride on.
Our legs were somewhat tired from yesterdays hills, so it was nice to only have 35 km. We are staying in a very nice Paradore hotel which is part of an old castle rebuilt.
Yah the sun is out today havent seen it for a few days. 80+km today of nice open roads with plenty of ups and downs. The wind was with us today quite strong in places it was mostly a tail wind so was quite helpful. We have left the coast and heading inland for our final destination. Only about 160km to go.
The A8 motorway that we seem to follow
This bridge had a very narrow cycle path very high up and fenced in but it was still terrifying to cross with the wind blowing
53km of rain today wasn’t so enjoyable and very cold up in the hills. It was good to get to our hotel for hot showers and planning. Thank goodness for Merino, Gortex and Ortlieb waterproof panniers.
The rain stopped not long after we arrived so we managed a quick walk of the small fishing village.
A nice sleep in this morning. Very misty and overcast most of the day. Rain this evening and quite cool. We spent the day touring the fishing village down at sea level and the surrounding village on the hillside Quite a trek on foot. Kev went back on the bike at high tide and quite a different aspect in the harbour. Dinner at a close by seafood restaurant where we had a feast of the local seafood.
Martin is back cycling with us today having 99% recovered.
Navigating out of Gijon was a little confusing this morning trying to avoid busy traffic. We ended up on our planned route which was a very busy road with a lot of heavy truck traffic. A friendly local cyclist came to our aid speaking only Spanish led the way for us, helping avoid the worst of the dangerous road.
Further on we passed heavy industrial towns with steel making and coal. It was nice to get off the main road and have a few kms on the Camino track. A long lunch was had before arriving at our two night stop in Cudillero. It has been another overcast and very humid day. The temperature tonight has dropped.
A late breakfast at the hotel this morning which for the first time included egg and bacon bocodillo. Perfect energy food. A very overcast day and very very humid. A few harder hills today up through the gum trees. This area is well known for its Sideriar (cider) and there were many orchards of apple trees with very small apples that are used in the cider. It tastes very bad.
